Duties of the County Attorney:

As the elected County Attorney, James Brue is the chief prosecutor for all adult felony crimes committed anywhere within Norman County, and also prosecutes gross misdemeanor, misdemeanor, and petty misdemeanor crimes which occur outside city limits. The County Attorney prosecutes all juvenile offenders regardless of where the offense occurs within the county.  He works with law enforcement advising them during their investigations through the time of sentencing as well as on programs to address crime prevention. For both juvenile and adult offenders, he determines if they meet the guidelines for the diversion programs to resolve cases short of criminal convictions and meeting the goal of serving justice.

The County Attorney is responsible for establishing paternity for children born out-of-wedlock and for enforcing child support orders.  He also initiates legal actions to protect vulnerable children and adults who are being abused or neglected or present a danger to themselves.

As the legal advisor to the county board and the agencies within the county, the County Attorney provides advise on such issues involving contracts, land, and employment with affect the operation of Norman County.
